This organization devoted itself to sick children. It was soon clear that some children needed to go for treatment to Addis Ababa. A reception center was opened in the capital and was called Alemachen which means “Our World”. Children with all kinds of diseases and disabilities were admitted to the center. When the famine subsided, the focus became more and more on children with congenital and acquired disabilities like clubfeet, cleft lip/palate and contractures after severe burns. When Terre des Hommes left Ethiopia, the house was taken over by the Catholic Church in Addis Abeba and the Vincentian Fathers where asked to manage the place.
